The Drive Down
The coastal road from Athens (the old highway, not the toll motorway) runs along the Attica Riviera, passing Glyfada, Vouliagmeni, and Varkiza before the landscape turns arid and the cliffs rise. The drive is itself part of the experience. The sea is on your left the whole way.
If you are driving independently, allow 90 minutes from central Athens and build in a stop at Vouliagmeni Lake — a geothermally heated saltwater lake carved into the cliffs, perfect for a swim on the way back.
The Temple
The Temple of Poseidon was built around 440 BC, at the same time as the Parthenon, from the same Agrileza marble. It has 15 of its original 34 columns standing. Unlike the Acropolis, you can walk right up to the columns and touch them — which most visitors do, despite the signs.
The site is positioned to be visible from the sea: sailors returning from voyages across the Mediterranean would see the temple as the first sign of Attica. The god of the sea, at the edge of the land. The positioning is not accidental.
Timing
The standard tour leaves Athens at 2–3pm and arrives for sunset, which in summer falls after 8pm. This is the correct way to do it. The morning light is pleasant but the late-afternoon light on white marble above blue water is the image everyone carries home.
Avoid August weekends. The parking lot fills by 5pm and the path to the temple becomes congested.
Going Independently
Buses run from the KTEL Attikis terminal on Pedion tou Areos (near Victoria metro, Line 1) — the journey takes about 90 minutes and costs €7 each way. Two services run: the coastal route (recommended) and the inland route. Confirm before boarding.
Driving is faster and more flexible — allow 75 minutes from central Athens via the coastal road, more in summer traffic.
