The Peloponnese in a Day

The circuit — Mycenae, Epidaurus, Nafplio — is 160km from Athens via the Corinth bridge. All three sites sit within 40km of each other in the northeastern Peloponnese. Mycenae

The citadel of Mycenae controlled the northeastern Peloponnese from the 16th to the 12th century BC — the Bronze Age civilisation that Homer's epics are rooted in. The Lion Gate (the only surviving monumental sculpture from prehistoric Greece) is the entrance. The Treasury of Atreus — a corbelled stone tomb 14 metres high, built without mortar around 1250 BC — is a 10-minute walk from the main site and is startlingly intact.

Heinrich Schliemann excavated Shaft Grave Circle A in 1876 and found the Mask of Agamemnon — now in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens. Whether it actually belonged to Agamemnon is contested; Schliemann was certain.

Epidaurus

The theatre at Epidaurus — built in the 4th century BC and designed by Polykleitos the Younger — seats 14,000 and has acoustics so precise that a whisper from the circular orchestra reaches the uppermost row without amplification. Stand in the centre and test it. The theatre is still used for performances during the Athens Epidaurus Festival (June–August).

The sanctuary of Asclepius (god of medicine) surrounding the theatre was the most important healing centre in the ancient world. Patients slept in the abaton and received diagnoses through dreams. The site museum holds the medical instruments.

Nafplio

The first capital of independent Greece (1821–1834) is the most beautiful small city in the country by a significant margin. Three Venetian fortresses (Palamidi, Acronafplia, and the Bourtzi island fortress), neoclassical mansions, and a waterfront promenade that rewards an hour of aimless walking. The Palamidi fortress requires 999 steps or a taxi; the views justify either approach.

Have lunch here before returning to Athens. The seafood on the waterfront is honest.
