Parthenon
The summit of classical Greek architecture — a Doric temple to Athena built 447–432 BC on the highest point of the Acropolis rock. Despite 2,500 years of earthquakes, wars, and a 1687 Venetian cannon blast, the bones remain extraordinary.

Erechtheion & Porch of the Caryatids
The six draped female figures (caryatids) supporting the south porch of this Ionic temple are the finest surviving examples of Greek sculptural architecture — the originals are in the Acropolis Museum; these are high-quality casts.

Ancient Agora of Athens
Where Athenian democracy was practised daily — the marketplace, law courts, and civic buildings of classical Athens spread across 24 hectares below the Acropolis. Socrates taught here. The reconstructed Stoa of Attalos houses the Agora Museum.

Temple of Hephaestus
The best-preserved ancient Greek temple in the world — a 449 BC Doric temple to the god of fire and metalwork, overlooking the Ancient Agora. Unlike the Parthenon, you can walk its full perimeter and read every frieze. Underrated.

Acropolis Museum
The finest ancient Greek sculpture collection in the world, displayed in a building designed specifically to frame the Acropolis through glass floors and walls. The Parthenon Gallery on the top floor — a 1:1 reconstruction of the frieze — is unmissable.

National Archaeological Museum
The greatest museum of ancient Greek art on earth — the Antikythera Mechanism, the Mask of Agamemnon, the Artemision Bronze, and 11,000 other objects spanning 7,000 years. Arrive early; give it four hours minimum.

Museum of Cycladic Art
The collection that influenced Picasso and Modigliani — spare marble figurines from the Cycladic civilisation (3200–2000 BC) in a beautifully designed Kolonaki townhouse. One of the most aesthetically coherent museum experiences in Europe.

Benaki Museum
An encyclopaedic collection of Greek art from prehistoric times to the 20th century — Byzantine icons, Ottoman-era jewellery, traditional costumes, and a rooftop café overlooking the National Garden. The definitive survey of Greek cultural history.

Diporto Agoras
No menu, no sign, no website. A subterranean marble-counter taverna in the Central Market that's been serving the same chickpea soup, grilled fish, and house wine since 1887. One of Athens' last genuine anachronisms.

Bairaktaris
The definitive Monastiraki souvlaki institution — pork skewers, gyros, and grilled lamb chops served with proper chips since 1879. Perpetually crowded, correctly so. Skip the tourist menu and order à la carte.

Ta Karamanlidika tou Fani
Part charcuterie shop, part meze restaurant — cured meats, aged cheeses, and Anatolian-Greek specialities in a beautifully tiled space. The taramosalata alone justifies the visit.

Strofi
A classic Athenian taverna on the south slope of the Acropolis — grilled meats, moussaka, and a rooftop terrace with unobstructed Parthenon views. The food is honest; the view is extraordinary.
