Meteora sits 350km northwest of Athens in the plain of Thessaly, where a forest of sandstone pillars — some rising 300 metres from the valley floor — was colonised by Byzantine monks from the 14th century onwards. At its peak the complex housed 24 monasteries. Six remain active today.
Why It's Worth the Distance
The 350km each way is the main obstacle. The standard day trip runs 14 hours door to door — departure around 7am, return around 9pm. It is a long day. Visitors who have done it consistently rate it as the highlight of their Greece trip.
The pillars were formed by a combination of seismic activity and water erosion over 60 million years. The monks initially accessed the monasteries by retractable rope ladders and baskets; the steps cut into the rock weren't completed until the 20th century.
The Monasteries
Six monasteries are open to visitors on a rotating schedule (not all are open every day). The largest and most visited is Megalo Meteoro (the Great Meteoron), founded in the 1340s. Varlaam is the second-largest and contains one of the finest Byzantine frescoes in Greece. Roussanou (now a nunnery) is the most dramatically positioned — it occupies the top of a narrow pillar with sheer drops on all sides.
Dress code is strictly enforced: covered knees and shoulders for all genders. Skirts are available to borrow at the entrance.
The Village of Kalambaka
At the base of the pillars, Kalambaka is the logical overnight stop if you want two days in the area — which is the more relaxed way to do it. The morning light on the pillars is different from the afternoon light, and the crowds arrive mid-morning with the day-trip coaches.
Overnight vs. Day Trip
The day trip is feasible and widely done. Two days gives you time to walk the footpaths between pillars, visit all six monasteries, explore Kalambaka and the nearby village of Kastraki, and see the light change across the day. If you have the flexibility, the overnight version is worth it.
