Athens has over 100 museums. Most of them are not worth your time. These six are.
1. National Archaeological Museum (Exarcheia)
The greatest collection of ancient Greek art on earth — 11,000 objects across 70 rooms. The Antikythera Mechanism (the world's first analogue computer, built circa 100 BC), the Mask of Agamemnon (an 1,100 BC gold burial mask), the Artemision Bronze (a 5th-century BC Zeus or Poseidon, recovered from a shipwreck), and the Jockey of Artemision (a young rider at full gallop, bronze, circa 150 BC) are its undisputed highlights.
Give it four hours minimum. Avoid Saturday afternoons. Take the metro to Victoria (Line 1) and walk five minutes.

2. Acropolis Museum (Koukaki)
Built specifically to house Acropolis sculpture, with a glass floor over the excavation of ancient Athens below. The top-floor Parthenon Gallery is a 1:1-scale reconstruction of the frieze at eye level — British Museum-held sections appear as pale plaster casts. Closed Mondays.
3. Museum of Cycladic Art (Kolonaki)
The best-curated museum in Athens. The Cycladic figurines — abstract white marble forms from 3,200–2,000 BC — look uncannily modern. Picasso and Modigliani both encountered them. The building is a converted neoclassical mansion in Kolonaki; the café courtyard is one of the better lunch stops in the area.
4. Byzantine and Christian Museum (Kolonaki)
The world's most comprehensive Byzantine art collection, presented in a 19th-century Florentine villa. Icon painting, jewellery, mosaics, and ecclesiastical objects from the 3rd to the 19th century. Dramatically undervisited relative to its quality. Budget two hours.
5. Benaki Museum (Kolonaki)
Greek history from prehistory to the 20th century in a neoclassical mansion. The collection spans Mycenaean gold, Byzantine icons, Ottoman-era textiles, and 1940s resistance memorabilia. The rooftop café overlooks the National Garden. Thursday evenings are free.
6. National Museum of Contemporary Art — EMST (Koukaki)
Athens' contemporary art museum, opened in 2017 in the former Fix brewery. The permanent collection focuses on Greek and international art from the 1960s onwards. Shows change seasonally; check the programme before visiting.
Practical Tips
All major Athens museums are free on the first Sunday of each month (November through March). Combined tickets exist for archaeological sites and some museums — buy at the first site you visit.
